W. D Amaradeva

 

W. D. Amaradeva was one of the greatest musicians, singers, and composers in the history of Sri Lanka. He was born on December 5, 1927, in Moratuwa, and his original name was Wannakuwatte Waduge Don Albert Perera. From a young age, he showed a strong interest and talent in music, which later developed into an extraordinary career.

To improve his musical knowledge, Amaradeva studied at the Bhatkhande Music Institute in India. There, he gained a deep understanding of Hindustani classical music, which he later blended with Sri Lankan music to create a unique style of his own.

His singing style was very special, known for its simplicity, clarity, and deep emotional expression. Some of his most popular songs include “Gilan Dura Dura Yanney,” “Ratnakare,” “Sandata Sarasavi,” and “Adarayai Karunawai.” In addition to singing, he was also a talented violinist and contributed greatly to music composition.


Amaradeva played a major role in developing and popularizing classical music in Sri Lanka. He successfully combined traditional and modern musical elements, creating a new musical identity for the country. Because of his immense contribution, he is often regarded as the “Father of Sri Lankan Music.”

In recognition of his service, he received many honors and titles such as “Pandit” and “Deshamanya.” His music was appreciated not only in Sri Lanka but also internationally.

He passed away on November 3, 2016, but his musical legacy still lives on. His songs continue to be loved by people and remain an important part of Sri Lankan culture.
